A. You can find a full list of what should be avoided during the cleanse at the bottom of this page. Keep in mind that if you slip up and indulge in one of the items on the "Take A Break From" list it's ok--you can jump right back into the Cleanse at any point. If you have a question about something I haven't addressed, feel free to reach out to me.
Gut Reset FAQ
(Seriously, Read This!)
Q. WHAT CAN'T I EAT DURING THE CLEANSE?
Q. CAN I DRINK COFFEE DURING THE CLEANSE? IF SO, CAN I ADD CREAM AND SUGAR TO IT?
A. Choosing to opt out of coffee or caffeine during the Cleanse is an individual choice. If you are interested in addressing a caffeine dependence, lessening your caffeine intake, or getting rid of it altogether, the Reset is an excellent container in which to do so. Know that if you choose to eliminate caffeine during the Cleanse, you may feel withdrawal effects. Also keep in mind that they WILL pass.
If you are happy with your caffeine intake, continue as usual. Just be sure not to add any dairy or sugar that you normally would. If you want to take out coffee but are not quite ready for a full break from caffeine, I recommend opting for strong black tea, green tea, or Matcha (personal favorite).
Q. OK, GOT IT ON CAFFEINE, WHAT ABOUT ALCOHOL?
A. Pretty sure you know the answer to this one already (come on now!). Certainly abstain from alcohol during the Reset. We are doing our best to decrease inflammation, remove sugar, smooth the blood sugar curve, and bring us back to a baseline. Alcohol tends to negate--well--all of that.
Q. IS IT OK TO MICROWAVE THE SOUPS AND BROTHS?
A. Ideally, you will warm your soups and broth over a stove. But we know that isn’t always possible on the go or at work. If a microwave is all you have access to, then of course this is fine (just be sure to take off the metal lid!). If you want to avoid the microwave for your soups, know that they are excellent at room temp or even cold. Also, warming your soup or broth and putting it into a thermos before you leave the house for the day is a great way to have warm broth and soup all day long. We suggest you have a couple insulated thermoses on hand for this Reset.
Q. IS IT OK TO MICROWAVE THE SOUPS AND BROTHS?
A. For a quick defrost: Add broth or soup jar to cold water and bring to a very gentle simmer on the stove--yes there is a slight risk of breakage, but I personally have never seen it happen at a low simmer. Once the sides are defrosted, the soup or broth will fall right out for full heating in a small pot.
For a longer defrost: The night before, set the soup and broth you want for the following day in the sink or on the counter (on a towel). When you wake the next day it should be defrosted and still quite cold.
Q. HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD I BE DRINKING DURING THE CLEANSE?
A. This is a very individualized question. The general answer is: plenty but not too much! Keeping in mind that you are getting lots of water in the form of broth, soup, tea, etc, drink enough water to keep you feeling hydrated and peeing often. I typically find myself drinking more water during the Reset (up to 40oz of plain water or water with lemon).
Q. WHAT IS "BULLETPROOF"?
A. To bulletproof a drink, as you will see I do often, means to add a fat to a hot liquid and blending or shaking to make a frothy, latte-style drink. While the original name ‘Bulletproof’ came from Dave Asprey, it has come to simply mean, a good-fat rich hot drink (coffee, tea, and bone broth all do well with some bulletproofing). Adding a healthy fat to a nutrient-dense drink helps us to fully absorb all the goodness, and keeps us satiated (like a snack) between meals. And they are SO delicious.
During the Cleanse, bulletproof drinks are your friend! Check out my daily intake layout for inspiration for daily bulletproof drinks, and watch this video on how to prepare your own bulletproof drinks.
Q. I'M PREGNANT. IS IT OK FOR ME TO DO THIS CLEANSE?
A. Hey mama! Everything we provide on the Reset is totally fit for you and your babe, but is not enough food to sustain you and the little one growing inside you. So add some anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense foods as you see fit. Include more (healthy) fats, lots of veggies, extra broth, maybe some meats, and of course, PLENTY of hydrating teas and water.
Q. I'M BREASTFEEDING. IS IT OK FOR ME TO DO THIS CLEANSE?
A. Hey mama! Everything we provide on the Reset is totally fit for you and your babe, but is likely not enough food to sustain you and your milk supply. So add some anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense foods as you see fit. Include more (healthy) fats, lots of veggies, extra broth, maybe some meats, and of course, PLENTY of hydrating teas and water.
Q. IS IT NORMAL TO HAVE LOWER ENERGY THAN USUAL DURING THE CLEANSE?
A. Certainly. Though the converse is also common. We are all snowflakes--unique--so how your body responds to the cleanse will be different from the next person. While your body is cleansing, toning down inflammation, and doing some real nutrient absorption, you may feel more tired than usual. This is normal, and tells me your insides are devoting time and energy to crucial internal processes. Take your days a bit slower, try to get more sleep, workout a little lighter, and give yourself some space.
Q. SHOULD I EXERCISE/WORK OUT AS I NORMALLY WOULD DURING THE CLEANSE?
A. This really varies from person to person. While some have increased energy and vitality during the Reset, many others feel more fatigued than usual as their bodies make some major adjustments internally. The answer always is: check in with yourself. YOU know the answer here: do you feel vibrant, like moving some energy would enhance your experience of the Reset? Then GO! Exercise as you would normally. Do you feel a little low or more tired? Take a NAP! Yea, a NAP! This is all about getting us modern humans to slow down, to tune in, and to give our bodies what they are asking for, below all the noise.
Q. I'M NERVOUS TO LET GO OF MY NORMAL FOOD. I HAVE TOAST (EGGS/BEANS/RICE/ETC) EVERY DAY! HOW AM I GOING TO STAY ON TRACK?
Oh friend, I feel you. This whole Reset is designed to give you a safe, short, container in which to examine your day-to-day habits, with the intention of getting a more objective view of your relationship to food. For many of us, this letting go is challenging. Know this: it gets easier! Nourishing yourself with bone broth all day, and the subsequent decrease in inflammation coalesce to calm your mind, reset your blood sugar, and allow you to feel empowered, not starving. SO many Cleansers have reported feeling totally full and happy through the Cleanse--the protein, fat, and fiber in our soups and broth go a long way towards keeping you satisfied. And remember, this isn’t about ‘winning’ or ‘failing.’ This is about tuning in, and treating yourself well, from the inside out.
Q. I'M CONSTIPATED. IS THIS NORMAL? WHAT DO I DO?
A. Sometimes when we take the 'bulk' out of our diets, the bowels can slow down. My suggestions for constipation are:
Morning Shot: (*Probably not what you think!* Find out more about Morning Shots here.) Definitely take a morning shot each morning and enjoy additional shots throughout the day (especially before meals). You need to move bile in order to move your bowels, which means encouraging the liver and gallbladder to move. The bitter/sour aspect of the morning shot really helps get your digestive system moving.
Water: Drink plenty of WARM water. Add a bit of lemon and a pinch of good sea salt if you'd like.
Magnesium: Magnesium can help relieve constipation. It is an osmotic laxative, which means it relaxes your bowels and pulls water into your intestines. The water helps soften and bulk up your stool, which makes it easier to pass. I like to drink CALM in the evenings when needed. Increase amount from suggested dosage until your bowels move.
Approved Fiber: Kraut, Sprouts, or steamed non-starchy veggies (i.e. onion, zucchini, cauliflower) add fiber which helps get your bowels moving. `
Q. MY BOWELS ARE LOOSE, IS THIS NORMAL? WHAT DO I DO?
A. This sometimes happens when we dramatically change our eating pattern by switching to a mostly liquid diet. Your best bet if you are experiencing this is to add some bulk to your daily intake. Enjoy some non-starchy steamed veggies (i.e. onion, zucchini, cauliflower) and your bowels should normalize quickly. Stay hydrated and be sure add a pinch of salt to your soups and broths to help your body hold onto some liquid and solidify the stool.
Q. DID I RUIN MY CLEANSE BY EATING (INSERT CHEAT HERE)?
A. This Reset isn’t about winning, losing, failing, etc. If you got off track by eating something on the “Take a Break From” list, check in with yourself about what motivated the slip. Hunger? Deep craving? Emotions? Habit? Whatever the case may be, just get right back on the plan: soups, broth, warm drinks, and water.
You can always start over and add a few days after the slip to get to 5. Make a pot of soup, grab a few extra jars of broth from the store, and begin again. Challenging yourself to breaking negative food patterns isn’t easy, and we should be gentle with ourselves while still keeping it SUPER REAL.
Q. I AM LESS HUNGRY THAN I THOUGHT...SHOULD I EAT ALL THE SOUPS AND BROTH ANYWAY, OR FREEZE THEM FOR ANOTHER TIME?
A. There is no need to eat all the soups if you are satiated. I often have soups left over after the Cleanse. Pop them into the freezer and use them later, maybe for a mini cleanse or simply for a nourishing meal in the future.
Q. DID I RUIN MY CLEANSE BY EATING
Q. WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN'T COMPLETE THE CLEANSE?
A. See answer above for “Did I Ruin My Cleanse By Eating…” and remind yourself this isn’t about ‘winning’ this is about being kind to your body, taking some time to look deeper at your needs, and coming back to a baseline.
If you can’t complete the Cleanse due to extraneous circumstances, freeze your soups and your broth and enjoy them another time. If you can’t complete it due to something else that came up (hunger, emotional milieu, family needs, etc.) worry not--either keep going for it and continue the Cleanse, or freeze your package and save for another time.
Q. WHAT SHOULD I DO ONCE I AM DONE WITH THE CLEANSE?
A. See the Breaking Your Cleanse page for a detailed description of how to reintegrate into normal eating after the Cleanse.
What you do after the Cleanse is all about what your goals are: maintain an anti-inflammatory diet, lose weight, gain more mental clarity, let go of gluten, stay more hydrated, incorporate more good fat, eat less carbs, be more mindful in your eating, etc. The point here is that the Cleanse is a wonderful container in which to make a positive change (maybe one you have been meaning to make for while now…). So use it as such, if that’s what feels good. I HIGHLY suggest taking full advantage of this Reset as a way to better the way you feel in your body beyond the cleanse.
Alternatively, simply go back to your normal life and see how you feel! Use the Reset as a break from your norm, and then do as you wish. :)
Q. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO THE CLEANSE?
A. I personally do this Cleanse about once every 2-3 months. It is such a sweet break from the norm, and I am so accustomed to slipping right in and enjoying the ride. Your body will be glad to have this break every few months if that is within your scope. If that feels like too much to you, perhaps try participating in our Cleanse twice a year. Final answer: there is no such thing as "too often" when it comes to doing our Cleanse!
